Jim Taunton is the grandson of the man known only as "Tonto". It is claimed that "Tonto" means "wild guy" in Potawatami. It is known that the word means "idiot" in Spanish. Jim tells it this way:
"How do you think a Potawatami like Grampa got to Texas? You may not know this, but back in those days, white folks would try to 'civilize' Indian kids by packing them off to mission schools or even outright kidnapping them. That's what happened to Grampa. This missionary family caught sight of him at one of the schools and spirited him off west on one of their 'revival trips'. Anyway, when they got themselves killed for some reason or another, this white boy saves Grampa's life. Since the white boy only saw 'injun' when he looked at Grampa, he dropped him off at the nearest village--Apaches, if you believe it.
Just imagine it, this kid comes out of nowhere, doesn't know the first thing about living on the plains, doesn't even speak a language the Apaches had even heard of. Of course they'll call him something like "Tonto". Anyway, that's how that happened.
Eventually--you know most of this, he grew up, hooked up again with your great-uncle, and the rest is istory. When the Lone Ranger went into retirement, Grampa used his piece of the silver mine fortune to get back to Michigan and make sure that his family would be set from that point on."
Jim began acting as the Ranger's confidant to repay the old family debt. He originally had very little respect for Ted Reid's attempt to fill the White Hat, but he's come to see that the Lone Ranger may have a worthy successor. In addition to helping maintain the Ranger's secret identity, Jim acts as Ted's business manager.
Jim Taunton looks pretty much like what he is, a well-dressed, successful lawyer. He conceals his ancestry since he has no illusions regarding how well an Indian attorney would be accepted in 1930s New York.

James Taunton is a skilled attorney and an expert in business law. He also is a bit of an outdoorsman and boater. He is skilled at disguise and acting and uses these abilities to fill in for Ted Reid if the situation calls for it--with appropriate misdirection and concealment, of course.
